Recently Robin and I have been working together to create a play kitchen for Rory and Rose to enjoy together. We found this piece of junk furniture on a local 'used' website. It was just $30!
Robin took the top off and removed the doors. He rehung the right door so it would open downwards, like a proper oven door.
Then he added some shelves and a partition wall. I painted the inside of the oven black with some chalkboard paint.
Rory helped with some sanding and then the unit got its first coat of blue paint.
Another coat of blue paint and a couple of yellow and this is what it looked like.
You might be able to see that Robin had already cut a hole for the sink to sit in and had put in a shelf!
I used some more chalkboard paint to create an oven door and the burners.
I had bought some IKEA place mats which I cut up and stuck on to make a back splash.
Then Robin stuck the sink bowl in (an old stainless steel mixing bowl) and put in the taps (which we'd found in a reclaim store).
We added some hooks to the side of the unit to hang some aprons, a chef's hat and an oven glove, which I'd made.
Some drawer knobs became burner knobs. It seemed the perfect place to hang a pot grab!
I attached a curtain that I'd made using some velcro and the kitchen was finished!!
Tomorrow Rose and I will visit IKEA to pick up some play pots and pans etc, while Rory is at school. I'm excited to see them play with the kitchen! Pictures of kitchen fun will definitely follow!!
Rory & Rose
We have enjoyed visits from both our grannies and one grandad recently. We will miss them all lots and lots and all our grandparents, and extended family, will be missing out on our daily adventures. So we decided to start a blog so all our Grannies and Grandads, plus anyone else who is interested, can find out what we're up to each week.

Rose's Words
We have been using baby signs with Rose since she was born and she used her first sign (milk; open and closed fist, like milking a cow) at 5 1/2 months. Now she's 12 months and using a multitude of signs and spoken words to communicate with us. At 12 months babies are expected to communicate between 8-10 words either verbally or through signs or gestures. We were impressed, on counting up what Rose says to us, that she uses approximately 20 words! Here is a list of what she can communicate, with pics and clips where possible!
Milk; Rose's first sign is now coupled with the words 'nan nan' to show that she'd like to nurse.
Dog; Rose's second sign showed us how much she adores Ollie. She has used this sign to tell me that a sheepskin rug that we were leaning on reminded her of Ollie's coat!
More; This is Rose's most used sign which she uses to tell us that she wants more of something. We then have to use other signs and words to work out what exactly she wants.
Light; Rose sometimes will tell us that she wants the lights off, if she's tired, or that she likes the light, or that she's noticed the light etc etc etc
All done; This sign tells us that she's had enough at meal times, bath times, play times and any other time!
Water; Rose loves to drink water and uses this sign to show that she's like a drink of water, usually after a meal time.
Eat; This sign is often confused with 'toothbrush' but when we interpret her properly she's telling us that she's hungry and wants to eat. Its only really confusing when there's a toothbrush around!!
Toothbrush; Rose will remind us that she needs to brush her teeth at bath time. Good thing too as both Robin and I are terrible at remembering!!
Hairbrush; Rose actually made this sign up herself when she wanted to use her hairbrush at the same time that I was brushing my hair!
Baby; Rose's favourite toy at the moment is her baby doll (thank you Grandad Alan!) She doesn't use a sign for Baby but says 'Dee Dee'. She uses this word for all baby dolls and teddy bears too. Her new doll has become known as Dee Dee by all the family and Rory has been known to go and grab the doll when she's cried out 'Dee Dee'!!
Mummy; Another spoken word!
Daddy; Her favourite person in the evenings!! Another spoken word!
Ollie; She will call for Ollie, especially if he's out in the garden and she's stood by the door watching him!
Rory; One evening Rose called for Rory, which sounded more like 'ooooor eeeee' when he's left her room without saying goodnight! She loves her brother!
Car; Since there are so very many cars in this house, courtesy of her big brother! Rose has become rather fascinated in cars also. When she sees or plays with a car she will say 'Brrmmmm!'
Duck; Rose loves her bath time ducks (thank you Granny Gloria!) and will play with them and say 'quack quack quack!'
Tickle; This was one of Rose's first words and I think says a lot about her personality!! She's not quite worked out how to tickle though! She woke me one morning basically head butting me and saying 'tickle tickle tickle tickle'!! Not so ticklish- rather more painful entirely!!
Hat; Rose loves to try on hats, especially bike helmets! They never stay on long though!
Hi and Bye; Rose loves to wave hello and goodbye and will say Hi whenever someone walks in the room!
UPDATE; The day after writing this post Rose treated us to two new signs or sounds with meaning. Rather confusingly it appears that she's using the same sound for two different words; balloon and cat (or squirrel)!! She makes a growly back of the throat noise, not unlike Charlie growling, when she sees a cat and/or a balloon! We're working on more specific signs, as well as the real words, for each word but luckily there is not often a cat close to a balloon in our house!!
We will add more pics and clips of Rose and her words/signs as we are able to record them so stay tuned!!

Medieval Banquet and 1st Birthday Take II
Today has been a busy day for Rory and Rose. Rory turned into Sir Rory of Churchillot and rode his faithful steed Neddy to school for a medieval banquet. Our contribution to the banquet was a rice krispie castle which had been delivered safely to school earlier in the day.
Meanwhile Rose celebrated her 1st Birthday with the other April babies from her playgroup. She got to wear yet another pretty party frock and we all got to eat more cake!!
If Rose smiled any wider she wouldn't be able to see!
Xavier is just a week older than Rose.
Brodie is just a week younger than Rose.
Eva is only 7 months yet, but enjoyed the party!
Joel shares his birthday with Rose's daddy; 29th April.
This was a yummy chocolate cake with coconut frosting.
Each baby had their own candle; the pink one was for Rose!
We tried to get a pic of them all together..
but they wouldn't sit still for long and were all more interested in the balloon (not pictured!!)

Rose's 1st Birthday Party
Rose had her 1st Birthday Party last weekend. A few friends came by to eat nibbles and cake. It was lots of fun and Rose was as good as gold!
Rose had a carrot cake covered in cream cheese frosting and roses!!
And she wore the most beautiful party dress with matching hat!!
Friends Noemi
and Eva joined us.
Of course big brother Rory was at hand to help eat the food!!
She had plenty of cuddles with friends, including Godmother to be Katherine!
Isla and Rory helped Rose open her presents!
All in all a great day!

A Busy Month! by Rory and Rose
Its been such a busy month with quite a few 'lost camera' moments and a couple of 'lost camera cable' moments too! Now we have our photos and video clips uploaded and we're ready to blog!!
In July we've celebrated Canada Day, Canada's birthday. We all wore our red and white outfits with Canada tee shirts and Rose wore her Canada leggings too.
We've played in the paddling pool (which is like bath water when its warmed up by the sun for a day)
and we've played in the sand pit.

The missing piece arrived for Rose's playnest and she has loved playing in it.
We have spent lots of time picnic-ing at our favourite wading pools
and lots of time at the cottage.
We went on a trip to the Farm where Rory played on a tractor
and we have been to the park where Rory played on the climbing frame, slide and swings.
For most of July Rory has been going to afternoon camp. Last week the theme was Myths and Magic and Rory dressed up as a pirate for the last day.
This week we are at the cottage all week long! We have played in the water, dug in the sand, watched the wildlife (we saw a cast of ten turkey vultures by the graveyard- spooky!! (http://www.vulture-territory.com/turkey.html) and a snake in the lake- it rhymes but is not poisonous!!
Monday was a bank holiday and lots of our friends came to play at the cottage. We had lots of fun; Rory played and shared with all the children and Rose was happily cuddled and held by lots of the mummy's.
Rose is getting bigger and stronger every day. She loves to stand up and is working on rolling over.
She has a fabulous giggle and is often found sucking her fingers. Rose bathes almost every night with Rory and sleeps from about 8pm. She wakes up whenever Rory wakes up the house which is more often than not about 7am these days. She also LOVES to play peekaboo!
Rory is also growing bigger and stronger but more in will than stature! He loves to wear a backpack, trainers and hat so he can play at being Diego Animal Rescuer, which is what he wants to be when he grows up!
